Why the name Medusa’s Tears? While some may know that Medusa is a feminist symbol, others only know bits and pieces of her story. Medusa was actually the most beautiful woman in all of Greece and high priestess to the goddess Athena. Suitors from all over would stalk the temple just to get a glimpse of her and beg her to marry them, but due to her duty to Athena she was to remain a virgin to maintain her role as high priestess. Medusa’s beauty swept the land so far that it reached the seas and even the god Poseidon heard of how beautiful she was and wanted to see for himself. One night Poseidon entered Athena’s temple to meet Medusa and was enamored with her by first glance. So much so, that he forced himself on her after she told him no and she was dedicated to her duty as high priestess. With all the commotion happening at her temple, Athena appeared and was furious at the sight of her high priestess laying not only with a man, but another god. Athena cursed her to have a head of snakes and to turn anyone that gazed into her eyes into stone while Poseidon walked away free.
Medusa’s story from there only became more burdened, and disheartening. She was later on killed by Perseus by beheading, but this is where the tears come in. It is said that Perseus kept the head of Medusa, because her gaze still turned man into stone, but also, that her tears had the ability to bring anything to life. At Medusa’s Tears we understand that tattoos and body modifications can be anything you want, but many times it is a means of therapy. We will bring your ideas to life, we will help breathe new life into you and help you become a new person. There is new life through art at Medusa’s Tears.
